Skills are important, but a recognised degree still opens doors in India – for jobs, government exams, promotions and higher studies. Here is why.
Every year, lakhs of students and working people ask the same question: “Is a degree really needed today, when everyone is talking about skills?” The honest answer is – you need both. Skills help you do the job well, but a recognised degree is often what gets you the chance in the first place.
1. Most jobs still ask for a degree
Look at any job posting in banks, IT companies, hospitals, schools or government offices. Most of them clearly mention a minimum qualification – a graduation or post-graduation. Without it, your application may not even reach the interview stage, however skilled you are.
2. Government exams need graduation
Popular exams for jobs in the central and state governments, banks and many public-sector units ask for a graduation degree from a recognised university. If you dream of a secure government job, a valid degree is the first step.
3. Promotions and salary growth
Many working professionals hit a “ceiling” after a few years. Companies often prefer a graduate or an MBA for team-lead and manager roles. An online or distance degree lets you study without leaving your job and qualify for that next step.
4. Higher studies and going abroad
You cannot join an MBA, MCA, M.Com or any master’s programme – in India or abroad – without a bachelor’s degree. A degree keeps your options open for the future.
5. Confidence and respect
A degree is also a personal achievement. Students who complete their graduation after a gap, or while working, often tell us that it gave them new confidence – at work and in the family.
Degree + skills = the winning combination
The best plan is to choose a degree that is recognised (check UGC / UGC-DEB approval) and to add practical skills along the way – computer skills, communication, digital tools and subject-specific training. Under NEP 2020, many universities now also allow multidisciplinary subjects and skill courses within the degree.
How to choose the right degree
- Check that the university and the course are approved (UGC / UGC-DEB for online and distance learning).
- Pick a course that matches your career goal, not just what friends are doing.
- If you are working, choose a flexible online or distance mode.
- Talk to a counsellor who explains the pros and cons honestly.
