Approvals, course structure, learning support, exam mode and more – a simple checklist to choose the right university for your degree.
With hundreds of universities offering the same course, how do you pick the right one? Advertisements all look good. Use this simple checklist to compare them properly.
1. Approval and recognition
This is the most important point. The university must be recognised by the UGC. For online and distance programmes, the course should also be approved by UGC-DEB for that session. Professional courses need approval from their council – for example BCI for law, PCI for pharmacy and INC for nursing.
2. Accreditation and ranking
NAAC grade and NIRF ranking show the overall quality of a university. They are not everything, but they are a good sign.
3. Course structure and specialisations
Read the syllabus. Does it have the subjects and specialisation you actually need for your career?
4. Mode of study and exams
Regular, online or distance? Are exams online or at a centre? Choose what fits your job, family and location.
5. Learning support
Live classes, recorded lectures, study material, doubt-solving and a good student portal make a big difference, especially for online learners.
6. Placement and career support
Ask what kind of placement help, internships or career services are offered – and ask for real examples.
7. Be careful of fake promises
- No university can guarantee a job.
- Avoid “degree without study” or back-dated degree offers – they are not valid.
- Pay admission fees only through the university’s official channels.
